Description

The Burnham High Lighthouse, built in the mid-19th century, stands with two light-keepers' cottages. The lighthouse is a tall, circular structure that tapers upwards, topped with a low conical roof. It has small rectangular windows on the north and south sides, and a viewing platform with a light opening on its seaward side. Each of the single-storey cottages, located to either side of the lighthouse, has two bays and features 16-pane sash windows within segmental-headed reveals. A roofed section connects the lighthouse to number 81, providing a doorway with sidelights and a six-panelled door. A similar doorway on the side of number 83 has been replaced with a sash window. A 20th-century addition has been made to the right return of number 83. A later 20th-century addition is present to the left return of number 81. The lighthouse and cottages are rendered in whitewash and have hipped slate roofs. Each cottage is crowned with a group of four octagonal stacks at its apex. The structure demonstrates group value in its cohesive design and association with maritime history.
