Description
The Pilton War Memorial is a monument dedicated to those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was erected in 1920, with the names of those who fell in the Second World War added after 1945.
The memorial is made of carved granite and features a simple granite obelisk that sits atop a slightly tapering square plinth and cap stone. This plinth is raised on a three-stepped square base, and the entire structure is partially enclosed by a semi-circular stone wall. The enclosure is fronted by iron railings and can be accessed via stone steps.
On two sides of the plinth, the names of the Fallen from the First World War are inscribed. The top steps bear the inscription “LEST WE FORGET” along with the dates 1914 – 1918. A third face of the monument lists the names of the Fallen from the Second World War, above the dates 1939 – 1945.
