Description
The War Memorial located in the church forecourt is a First World War memorial that dates from 1920. It is carved from blue Pennant stone and features an octagonal plan in the form of a stone Calvary cross. The memorial includes a sculpted figure of Christ beneath a gabled weatherhood and is topped with a foliated finial. The tall shaft is set into an octagonal plinth, which rests on a semi-circular, two-stepped base made of blue Pennant stone. The faces of the plinth have sunken and foliated panels, each carved with one of the emblems or instruments of the Passion. The three front (south-east) panels are inscribed with the following lettering: "TO THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919."
Additionally, there is a dwarf wall along the rear curve of the platform, and originally, there were metal railings at the front, which have since been removed.
