Description
Via Crucis and Fountain, built around 1860, features sculptures by James Forsyth and was likely constructed by builders F and G Brown, with possible architectural design by C E Giles. It was commissioned for Reverend W J E Bennett. The structure is made of rubble and ashlar, beginning at the north end with a fountain and drinking well set in a large recess. This recess is apsidal with ribs and has a cusped arch opening into a gabled front. The building is angled with steps leading up to a north porch beside it, close to the church steps that ascend to the west end. Six sculptured scenes depicting the Way of the Cross are arranged in gabled recesses, with the seventh scene, the Crucifixion, located in the gable of the north porch of the Parish Church. Pointed arcades connect the scenes, and there is a doorway between the two northernmost scenes.
