Description

Number 1, Church Street is a late 17th century building that has been altered in the early 19th century and later. It is situated on a corner site with a splayed angle and features painted ashlar. The building has a cornice and parapet, with plain eaves on the corner section and most of the return to Church Street. The hipped roof is covered with pantiles.

The structure has two storeys, with two windows facing King Street and three windows facing Church Street, all of which are fitted with glazing bar sashes. The mid to late 19th century shop front includes a fascia and vertical glazing bars, with a recessed glazed door at the angle. To the right, there is a panelled door in a round-headed opening, topped with an arched fanlight, while the left side features a segment-headed fanlight.

At the rear, there is a gabled wing that contains a two-light window and a single-light window dating from around 1700. Inside, there is a mid-18th century staircase with a ramped and moulded handrail and a straight string leading to the first floor. The newel post of the stair to the attic has scratch-moulding. On the first floor, the west room has two beams, one of which has a curved ridge-stop of chamfer. The middle room features a chamfered beam with wooden mouldings, while the east room is entirely panelled with moulded raised and fielded panels, and bolection surrounds to the doorway and fireplace. Additionally, there is a late 17th century door to the attic stairs, which has eight thin panels with the upper two shaped like lozenges.
