Description
Number 9 Mill Street is a house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century and the 19th century. It has two storeys and features a three-cell lobby entrance plan. The building is timber-framed and has rough-cast rendered panels. The upper floor juts out over the street front. The roof is made of concrete tiles and has an axial chimney constructed of gault brick. On the first floor, there are 19th-century small-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has two 19th-century splayed bay windows, one of which is a shop window supported by cantilevered brackets. The entrance door is a four-panelled design from the 19th century.
To the right of the entrance, there is a carriage entrance with a pair of large boarded doors from the 19th century, likely created by raising the upper floor of the original service end of the house. Inside, the hall and parlour feature good rib-moulded main beams and joists. The axial chimney was rebuilt in the late 16th century, incorporating some moulded limestone blocks from a medieval building. The hall fireplace has an ogee-moulded bressumer, and the chamber above features an arched opening with moulded plasterwork. Original windows with moulded mullions are exposed in two first-floor rooms. A late 16th-century kitchen wing includes an external chimney with a large fireplace and a clasped purlin roof. The main roof was rebuilt in the 19th century.
