Description
No. 5 Mill Street is a building that consists of two shops with a dwelling above and to the rear. It dates from the early 18th century, with the possibility of an earlier core, and has undergone alterations in the 19th century. The left side is timber-framed and rendered, while the right side is constructed of gault brick, featuring a parapet gable and red brick strings at the first and second floors. The roofs are plaintiled, with a moulded wooden fascia and a hipped cross-wing on the left. There are gabled dormers with horizontally sliding small-pane casements, and late 18th or early 19th century small-pane casements at the first floor. The shop fronts are from the late 19th century, supported by slender iron columns with arched heads and enriched spandrels. The entrance doors are glazed and panelled. A wing at the rear, dating from the 18th century, was encased in gault brick in 1890, which is marked by a carved date.
