Description
The Old Church House is a building that was formerly a museum, located on Church Steps. The ground floor and basement are made of stone and are believed to date from the 17th century. The basement features a chamfered stone doorway with a four-centred arch. The ground floor has a doorway with a double-ogee stop-moulded wooden frame (which has been restored) and a nail-studded door with ring handles. To the right of the doorway is an original five-light stone mullioned and transomed window, while to the left, a modern three-light mullion and transom window has replaced a former Gothic-style crenellated bay.
The two upper floors are jettied on a moulded bressumer, and the structure is likely stucco over a timber frame, having been rebuilt or altered in the 19th century. Each upper storey features four pairs of wooden casements with transoms and Caernarvon arch heads, along with a moulded wooden band over the first floor. The roof is covered with pantiles, and the eaves have been altered; it is evident from the interior that the front was once gabled.
Inside, the ground floor room to the right has a large fireplace with a slightly cambered lintel and traces of a large herringbone brick fireback with pointed finials, as well as cross beams. There is a studded door with a stop-moulded ovolo surround. The hall features raised and fielded mid-18th century panelling. A rear extension includes a modern staircase and a blocked three-light wooden mullion window.
