Description

No 8 Bath Street is a Grade II listed building, part of a three-storey terrace constructed between 1811 and 1813. This terrace is situated on the east side of Bath Street, which was newly cut through from the Market Place. The buildings are mostly two bays wide and feature painted ashlar fronts, with dividing pier strips, plat bands, and moulded strings above the first floors. There is a thin moulded astragal cornice and a parapet that ramps down the steep slope.

The windows are glazing bar sash types, with No 3 having arched surrounds and a moulded string at the impost level. No 3 also features an early 20th-century shop front and an arched door to the right, adorned with a radiating and wreathed fanlight. This property has a chamfered corner with a curved panel and a one-bay return to Eagle Lane.

No 4 includes a double shop front, possibly original, supported by detached fluted Ionic columns and an arched doorway with a keystone between Nos 6 and 7. No 8 has a projecting wrought and cast iron sign and a one-bay return to the churchyard, with a window on the ground floor. The building has a splayed angle with a recess on the upper floor that contains a heraldic achievement of the Thynne Family, Marquesses of Bath. No 8 is a two-bay extension that was formerly a separate house facing the churchyard, featuring a six-panel door with a broken-urn-and-wreath-type knocker and first-floor windows in arched surrounds framed by pilaster strips.
