Description
Doveleys, located on Russet Way, is a cottage that has been divided and dates from the late 16th century, with some alterations in the marly 17th century and modernization in the 20th century. The exterior features render over random rubble, a slate roof, and brick stacks at the gable ends and to the right of the cross passage. The building has a three-cell and cross passage plan and is two stories high. It has irregularly placed 20th-century two and three-light casements, along with a small two-light stair window set slightly to the right above the original entrance, which now has a 20th-century door. An additional 20th-century door is inserted in the left end bay, which originally served as the kitchen.
Inside, a notable feature is a corn drying kiln located to the left of the now-blocked fireplace. This circular kiln is about 1.5 meters across and has a projecting ledge approximately 300 mm wide, positioned about 750 mm from the ground. There is a glazed opening on the south side and two blocked openings on the west that would have connected to the hearth. To the right of the fireplace is a bacon curing chamber, which includes a tiny wooden lancet window that is blocked externally. The interior also features a chamfered beam with run-out stops. The fireplace backing onto the cross passage in "Doveleys" is modern, as are the other fireplaces, with the original stairs located to the left.
