Description
Cushuish Farmhouse is a late 16th- to early 17th-century farmhouse, renovated in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rough-cast cob and random rubble, with a slate roof that is hipped to the left and gabled to the right, with sprockets projecting below the eaves. A large external stack is located on the rear elevation, with a bread oven projection, and a smaller stack projects from the left return elevation. The farmhouse is arranged in an "L" shape, with the facade facing south. The wing return is on the north-west side, set into a hillside, with an independently roofed addition in the angle to the north-east.
The front of the farmhouse is two storeys with three bays, featuring 19th-century three-light casement windows. A gabled porch is positioned centrally with two-light glazing above. A projecting bay on the south-east side has a three-light casement and a small glazed opening to the right.
Inside, the front room on the right side of the house contains a large chamber to the right of a blocked fireplace, with smoke blackening on the inserted ceiling above, which is partially cob-lined, and with a blocked flue. A circular bacon curing chamber is located to the left, now accessed from the present-day kitchen on the north side, which also has a blocked bread oven. Chamfered beams are present in two central rooms on the east front, which includes a cider house at the north end containing late 19th-century machinery.
