Description

Hillview, formerly The Mount, is a house dating to the 17th century, and possibly an expansion of a late 16th-century building. It is constructed of slate-covered and red sandstone random rubble, with a slate roof and brick stacks. The house has a "L" shape, originally featuring a two-cell cross passage with a western extension. It is two storeys high, with three bays, and is unusually tall. The first floor has three late 17th-century cruciform windows, and there is one ground-floor window to the right. All windows have leaded panes. A small 20th-century glazed opening is located to the right of the central doorway, which has a 3-light casement beneath a wooden lintel to the left. The 20th-century front door is set within a partially demolished and rendered porch with a lean-to roof. Inside, the cross passage has a stone flag floor. The room to the right contains a possible rebuilt fireplace with a chamfered stone lintel and a small cloam oven to the right. A square, projecting staircase turret is visible on the west wall. The south wing was not inspected.
