Description
Lower Mills is a mill that has been converted into a warehouse, dating from around 1800. The building features a rendered exterior with squared quoins and a modern pantile roof. It has an "L" plan layout and stands two stories high with a five-bay facade that is oriented at right angles to Darshill. The facade includes a square-headed doorway with a 20th-century door, flanked by modern casement windows. The first floor has mullion windows with two and three lights, which lack mouldings and are mostly blocked, except for the one on the right. There is a flanking wing at right angles to the main front, which is of similar size and has the same type of mullion windows. Additional mullion windows can be found on the right return facing Darshill. At the rear, there is an early 19th-century doorcase featuring a triangular pediment supported by Ionic pilasters, suggesting it may have been the former millhouse. Lower Mills is notable as one of the few complete mills that still exist in the area.
