Description
The silk drying shed, located to the north of Darshill House, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from Doulting rubble with rough quoins on the ground floor, while the upper section is made of brick, topped with a pantile roof. The building is two stories high and features one wide bay. On the east side, there is a fixed window with glazing bars and a square-headed doorway with a dressed stone surround. The west side has a 20th-century window and a segmental arch doorway. The first floor on each of the three sides includes panels of perforated brick, one course thick, to allow for ventilation, supported by solid panels with nine single vent holes that are two courses thick. There is also a door on the north wall of the first floor. This shed is an important remnant of the once-thriving textile industry in the area and is locally referred to as a handle house.
