Description
The stables located to the west of the courtyard of the Dolphin Public House in Ilminster date from the late 17th century. They are constructed from limestone rubble, with some areas rendered and others replaced with breeze-blocks, topped by a pantile roof.
Inside, the roof features thatch beneath the pantiles, with threaded purlins and a ridge set in a notch. A white-washed rubblestone wall divides the building into two sections, each supported by heavy rough cross-beams that hold up an upper floor with wide elm floorboards. The stable on the left (south) contains elm mangers and hayracks.
The yard has cobblestones beneath a layer of tarmac, and a spring rises at the center-rear, flowing southwest under the rear wing to a standpipe of a pump that still remains.
