ILMINSTER SILVER STREET (North side) Railings, gates and revetment wall to churchyard of Parish Church of St Mary

GV II

Railings, gates and revetment wall. C18 and mid C20. Mid C20 square-section railings surround the churchyard, except to the south, where they sweep down to the revetment wall. The south-east corner has a square flight of steps leading both to a footpath bordering the churchyard to north and east, and to a gate which has a low horizontal bar with an inverted semicircular arch below it; a similar gate is to the east of the north transept, and double gates to the north of the north porch and to the west door, where a simple overthrow supports a C20 lamp of traditional design. Inside these gates, steps lead to the door, to the right of them a small gate leads down to the heating system. The revetment wall, of coursed limestone rubble with coping, is approx 1.5m high to the south, and as it turns uphill into Court Barton at the west end, it diminishes to form a plinth for the railings.
