Description
The war memorial in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin Church in Ilminster is a First World War memorial erected in 1917. It was designed by F. Bligh Bond, with sculpture work by Herbert Reed of Exeter. The memorial features a white Portland stone canopied Calvary with an octagonal cross, which stands on a grey Doulting stone stepped octagonal plinth. The plinth is inscribed with the words: "To the Memory of the Brave Men of Ilminster who gave their lives for their Country in the Great War 1914-". This memorial is notable as a work by a distinguished church restoration architect and church sculptor.
