Description

There are four chest tombs located to the south-east of the Parish Church of St Mary in Ilminster, dating from around 1800 to the early 19th century. The first tomb is approximately 10 meters south-west of the south porch, made of Ham Hill stone, featuring a hipped top and clasping panelled pilasters on the sides and at the centers of the long sides, topped with Ionic capitals. While most inscriptions are eroded, the east-facing panel has legible dates of 1839, 1845, and 1915.

The second tomb is about 10 meters east of the south transept, also constructed from Ham Hill stone and dating to the early 19th century. It has a hipped top, a moulded plinth, and raised-and-fielded panels between panelled pilasters. Most inscriptions are eroded, but a date of 1861 is still visible.

The third tomb is located approximately 15 meters east of the south transept, dating to the early 19th century, featuring panelled sides and enclosed by spearhead railings with urn finials, all resting on a stone plinth.

Finally, there is a similar late 18th-century chest tomb with panelled pilasters located about 18 meters south-east of the south transept.
