Description
No. 18 and 20 Silver Street is a shop and house, now used as offices, built around 1850. The building is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with wide eaves and a brick stack located to the left of the center on the party wall. It has a U-shaped plan with rear wings and stands two storeys tall with attics.
The shop on the right (No. 18) has a symmetrical three-window range, while the house on the left (No. 20) has a two-window range with a door to the right. There are steps with wreathed iron handrails leading up to both doors. The doorcases feature cushion-moulded pilasters with a diamond-shaped panel below consoles that support a flat hood. Both doors have shallow overlights with Gothic-style glazing; the right door is a 20th-century replacement, while the left door is original, featuring three vertical panels, two of which are now glazed. All windows have moulded architraves with keystones, with the shop having lower sills at plinth level and 20th-century plate glass on both sides. The other windows are 8/8-pane sashes.
The right rear wing, which was once stables, has been altered to serve as a dwelling, while the left wing is part of the offices. Inside, No. 18 has a central staircase, and No. 20 has a staircase on the right, both featuring stick balusters and turned newels. The interiors also include four-panel doors and stairs leading to boarded attics.
