Description
The Chantry is a chantry chapel that has been converted into a cottage. It dates from the early 16th century and was altered and enlarged, likely in the 17th century, with restoration occurring in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed from red sandstone random rubble, featuring quoins at the west end and a thatched roof. There is a large external stepped stone stack on the right gable end, accompanied by a brick stack, and a raking buttress.
The layout includes a barrel vaulted chantry chapel that was later ceiled, with a two-storey addition at the east end. The north front is one and a half storeys high, showcasing a two-light dormer casement in the addition on the left. On the ground floor, there is a small glazed opening to the left of a butt joint, and to the right, a two-light hollow chamfered mullioned casement window with a Tudor arched head. The entrance features a chamfered doorway, a thatched hooded porch, and a 20th-century plank door.
Inside, the main feature is a 4 x 4 compartment moulded ribbed barrel vaulted ceiling with a moulded wall plate. There is a blocked Tudor arched window on the south wall and a steeply chamfered beam with step and run-out stops at the east end of the original building. The Chapel of Our Lady Sweetwell at Vellow was licensed in 1542.
