Description

Kingfisher Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with an enlargement in the 17th century and alterations in the mid-20th century. The exterior is colourwashed rough cast with a thatched roof and stone stacks positioned left and right. A more recent stone stack rises from the eaves to the right of the cross passage, and another is present on the gabled wing. Originally a two-cell plan, it was expanded to an "L" shape. The cottage is one and a half storeys high with three bays. It features 20th-century 2-light dormer casement windows on the ground floor, two 2-light casement windows to the right, and an early 19th-century 3-light leaded casement window with quadrant stays to the right of a partially glazed 20th-century door. A red sandstone buttress is located at the end of the bay to the right. The interior was not inspected, but reports indicate a sail containing a spiral stair is present in the left room, to the right of the original fireplace, which also features a 17th-century spice cupboard. There are chamfered beams with run-out stops, and a root to the right of the cross passage. Evidence of a bacon curing chamber, now a garden entrance beside the added 17th-century stack, remains, along with chamfered beams with scroll stops.
