Description
Westralia is a cottage that likely originated as part of a larger building that is now lost or possibly part of Manor Fara. It dates from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and extensive changes in the early 20th century. The structure is made of colourwashed random rubble and features a double Roman tile roof with overhanging eaves supported by sprockets and brick stacks on both the left and right sides.
The cottage is two storeys high and has two bays. The first floor has early 20th-century two-light casement windows, while the ground floor features a canted bay and plain tiled pentice roof, with sash windows that include marginal glazing bars on the right and a single light 20th-century window to the left of a gabled, tiled, random rubble porch that has a 20th-century plank door.
Inside, the cottage reveals a surprising contrast to its exterior. The ground floor appears to have originally been one large room, indicated by the regular placement of plasterwork fleur de lys and roses between stop-chamfered beams with run-out stops. On the upper floor, the right gable end displays an unidentified coat of arms within a strap work surround, and two pairs of jointed crucks are visible. The history of the house's evolution remains unclear.
