Description
The main entrance gateway, located 35 metres northwest of Ven House, is an 18th-century structure that was relocated in the 19th century. It is made of Ham stone ashlar and features gate piers that are approximately 600mm square, with a moulded plinth, rusticated shaft, cornice cap, and simple crown finials. The gateway is adorned with well-crafted wrought iron gates that have a swept curved top rail. On either side of the gateway, there are three bays of balustrading about 900mm high, which terminate in cut and squared stone sweeps. Originally, the old road, which connected East Street and The Old Road (Dorset), was about 400 metres to the north but was replaced in the 19th century by London Road, leading to the relocation of the gates. This gateway is part of the setting for an important country house.
