Description

The corridor linking Ven House and the Orangery was built between 1835 and 1836 by Decimus Burton. It is constructed of red brick with Ham stone ashlar dressings and features a timber and glass roof. The corridor is two storeys high, with ten visible bays on the north side and seven on the south. The south elevation showcases a stone arcade with semi-circular arches, Tuscan pilasters between the bays, and a simple entablature above. Each archway has pairs of 10-pane French doors topped with radial glazed fanlights, while the lower storey is concealed by a terrace. The north elevation is primarily brick, featuring a string course between the floors and at the impost level. It has ten visible bays, with high-level semi-circular windows set in architraved surrounds with keystones, and plain timber doors leading to the basement in alternate bays. This corridor is an important part of the setting for a significant country house.
