Description

The North-East Pavilion and balustraded brick wall at Ven House is a pavilion associated with a country house, built between 1698 and 1730 by Richard Grange for James Medlycott. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with Ham stone dressings, and features a flat or near-flat roof that is hidden behind a parapet. The pavilion has a rectangular plan, is two storeys high, and consists of three bays by three bays, with a through arch running north to south.

The north elevation has a high stone plinth and Corinthian pilasters at each bay, with the centre bay having doubled pilasters. The parapet is adorned with balustraded open panels. The first and third bays feature 18-pane sash windows set in architraved keystoned surrounds, with niche panels in the plinth below and additional stone panels above. The centre bay has a semi-circular high arch with an architrave and keystone, topped with an uncarved panel above, and is flanked by a large pair of fielded panel gates.

The south elevation is similar but has 12-pane sash windows without keystones in the architrave, and the doors are located in the plinth on both sides. The east elevation has no windows, while the west elevation is quite plain, featuring a long plain recessed stone panel below the parapet.

A link wall curves around to connect with the main house, featuring a rusticated plinth that matches the height of both the pavilion and Ven House, capped by an open balustrade, all constructed in ashlar work. This pavilion is an important part of the setting for a significant country house.
