Description

Limekiln, dating to the early 19th century, stands about 100 metres northwest of Doniford Farmhouse. Constructed from squared and coursed blue lias, it features brick relieving arches and lining within the kiln bays. The kiln has a free-standing oval plan with two openings on its west face and one on the east. A long ramp rises from the coast on the northeast corner of the structure. Notable features include splayed, bevelled corners, a moulded string course, and a partially damaged parapet. The west front has two arched openings, with remnants of projecting walls that indicate a former lean-to roof. Recesses lined with brick are set above four courses of stonework, with the floor level in the right recess slightly elevated, potentially due to intentional design or debris accumulation. A single arched opening on the east wall is now blocked by a doorway, used as storage. The ramp itself, approximately 25 metres long, rises from the coast to the northeast corner. The kiln is believed to have ceased operation in the 1930s. Despite damage to the parapet and ramp coping, it remains an impressive and historically significant structure in a prominent coastal location near Doniford.
