Description

Doniford House is a farmhouse that dates back to the late medieval period, with significant enlargement around 1600 and alterations made in the mid-19th century. It underwent restoration in the late 20th century. The building features roughcast over rubble with an asbestos slate roof and a brick stack on the right gable end.

The plan is complex, consisting of a three-bay open hall house that is ceiled, with a two-storey parlour at the right end. To the left is a coeval two-storey kitchen cross wing, which includes two additional rooms at the rear that contain a small parlour. The house is two storeys tall and has a façade with one bay on the ground floor and five bays on the first floor. The cross wing features three-light casements, while all other first-floor windows are modern two-light casements. The ground floor has twelve-pane sash windows, and there is a tripartite sash window to the left of a gabled porch that has decorative bargeboards and a plank door. Access to the cross wing is provided by an external flight of steps leading to a plank door on the first floor.

Although the interior was not viewed, it is reported to contain a moulded two-panel compartment ceiling to the right of a wide cross passage. The left side features a hall that is described as featureless, with a lateral stack and a modern grate. There is a two-centred wooden doorframe leading to a modified stair, and the hall roof has three pairs of arch-braced cruck trusses with two tiers of wind braces. One of the two small rooms at the rear of the kitchen wing, now used as a store, is said to contain plasterwork decoration on the beams and cornice frieze. This building presents a very unusual plan for this area of the county.
