Description

House. Dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, with possible origins in an earlier period, No. 1 Chaplins stands in Limpetshell Lane, Williton. The house is constructed of sandstone rubble to the gable ends, with painted render over stone and cob walls; the roof is thatched, and has 20th-century brick ridge tiles and right-end stacks. It likely originated as a three-unit building, with the entrance to the right of the hall stack and a heated parlour on the right side. The building is one storey high with an attic, and has a three-window front featuring mid to late 20th-century windows and a door. A continuous lean-to extension runs along the rear, and it includes an old two-light casement window with glazing bars within an eyebrow dormer. The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to retain numerous original features, including chamfered beams, open fireplaces with chamfered bressummers, a chamfered doorway with a shallow pointed arch leading to an old plank door, and a jointed cruck roof.
