Description

The gates, gate piers, railings, dwarf wall, and associated wall belonging to Williton Hospital date to around 1838, likely designed by Scott and Moffatt. The gates are double, with cast iron fleurs-de-lys hooded standards that slope down towards the centre, featuring a pedimented gate pier flanked by a smaller wicket gate. The gate piers are constructed of Bath stone ashlar, with flat tops, moulded cornices, and plinths. The railings are supported by fleurs-de-lys headed standards, set into a low dwarf wall built of random rubble with flat sandstone coping. The wall sweeps back for the entrance and fronts the road, with outer piers. A red sandstone random rubble wall extends beyond the piers, rising to approximately 3 metres and including square-headed openings.
