Description
Nos 5 and 7 High Street are two houses that have been converted into shops, likely dating from the 18th century. They are constructed of local stone, with a pebbledash render and a colourwashed finish. The roof is covered with concrete double Roman tiles and features a plain gable. The buildings are two storeys high and consist of three bays.
The central entrance is a six-panel door framed by attached Doric columns, topped with an entablature and a pediment. On either side of the entrance are early 20th-century shop fronts, each with recessed central doorways and simple fascias. Above these shop fronts, there is an early 20th-century triple sash window in the third bay, which has a horizontal sliding centre light. A wrought iron bracket for a hanging sign is located between the first and second bays.
The interiors have not been seen, but No 5 was known as the George Inn until the late 18th century and was first mentioned in 1577. It is said to have good stairs inside.
