Description

Manor Cottages is a former manor house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the early 17th century. The building features whitewashed render and some rubble, with a double-Roman tile roof. It has a central rendered stack on the front block and two brick stacks on the rear wing, forming an L plan. The structure is two storeys high, with a two-bay frontage that includes 3 and 4-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned windows with stopped labels. The central door opening is framed by an edge-roll moulded stone surround and features a studded plank door, topped with a 20th-century gabled hood supported by wooden brackets.

On the right side, there is a blocked 4-light stone-mullion and transom window, also ovolo moulded, with a stopped label above that continues as a string on either side. Above, there is a blank ovolo-moulded 2-light mullioned attic light. The rear wing is of lower height and has similarly moulded 2 and 3-light stone-mullioned windows, some with stopped labels, along with a plank door.

A notable feature is the impressive wagon-shaped plaster ceiling above the right two rooms on the first floor of the front house, which includes flat moulded and ornamental ribbing, an elaborate central pendant, and a plaster shield of arms on the north side flanked by intricate strapwork. Another ceiling in a similar style is present over the left room of the first floor, featuring a central motif of moulded ribs and part of a pendant. However, plaster-boarded 20th-century ceilings currently obscure these well-preserved features.
