Description

Lyons Court Farmhouse is a manor house or court house dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and subsequently. It is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings. The wing on the right has bands of ashlar alternating with the rubble. The roofs are double Roman tiled, with rubble and brick stacks; a prominent square ashlar stack to the right features a pierced upper section with double trefoil-headed openings on each side. The building is arranged in an irregular Z-plan, incorporating a cross passage, a hall to the right with a projecting oriel, and a service end to the left with a rear wing.

The farmhouse is two storeys and attics, with three bays and projecting wings on both the right and left. The recessed central bay features a chamfered and pointed doorway, above which is a two-light casement window within chamfered surrounds with mullions and a cusped, four-centered head. The projecting wings have later single, two-light, and paired casement windows in plain surrounds. A small light with a hollow-chamfered surround and a trefoil head is located within the inner wall of the right wing. The outer wall of the left wing has a projecting stack with offsets. A set-back wing features a square window on the ground floor with four pierced quatrefoils, and a small pointed light above. A single-storey lean-to is attached to the right, covered by a pantile roof. The rear elevation displays two first-floor windows similar to those on the front, a chamfered four-centre headed doorway, and a service wing to the right with a two-light casement flanked by smaller pointed lights in the gable end.

Inside the farmhouse, the cross passage retains two stone service doorways within stop-chamfered and four-centre headed surrounds. The kitchen, located at the rear right, has a stone fireplace with a stop-chamfered and four-centre headed surround. A small sitting room, previously an oriel on the front right, features a tall, double-chamfered, pointed archway of freestone, now blocked. To the front left is a restored freestone fire surround with a hollow-step-ogee moulded and four-centre headed surround. The little hall, originally a service room to the left of the cross passage, has a spice cupboard with a lattice work door and butterfly hinges, and a small stone niche. The pantry has a small stone niche and a freestone doorway within a chamfered and four-centre headed surround. On the first floor, rooms on the right retain moulded wall plates from the original hall, along with two carved figure head corbels (one defaced). The front right room (previously an oriel) retains a wide freestone fireplace with a chamfered and four-centre headed surround. A rear left bedroom includes a studded plank door with strap hinges, and a chamfered arched surround. The roof over the former hall (right) consists of three bays with collar beam trusses and two pairs of curved windbraces to each bay.
