Description

A row of four cottages located on North Street in Wincanton, dating to around 1800. The cottages are constructed of local stone rubble with exposed timber lintols, and have stepped clay tile roofs with simple gables and brick chimney stacks. Each cottage is two storeys high and two bays wide.

No. 11 has a blocked opening in the lower bay and a six-pane sash window in the lower bay 2, with small-pane casements above. A six-panel door with glazed toplights is set in a plain recess. The roof was apparently altered in the late 20th century. No. 13 features a four-light casement window to the lower bay 1, and a four-pane sash window above. The lower bay 2 has a six-panel door with glazed toplights, accessed via two steps. No. 15 has two-light casement windows with single horizontal glazing bars, tall boarded yard gates with a wicket in bay 1, and a plain boarded door in a deep reveal, accessed via two steps, in bay 2. No. 17, which was formerly rendered, has a six-pane sash window to the lower bay 1, a three-light horizontal sliding sash window to bay 2, a large and a small two-light casement windows above, and an early 20th-century glazed door between the bays. The interiors have not been inspected.

The cottages form a picturesque group situated on a hillside, with a raised pavement to the front and steps at the north end.
