Description
Stogursey Castle is a Grade II* listed structure featuring the remains of a curtain wall, part of which has been incorporated into a cottage. The castle dates back to the 12th century and was built on the site of an earlier fortification that was dismantled in the mid-15th century. A dwelling from the 17th century was restored in the mid-19th century and was undergoing major repairs at the time of the survey in September 1983.
The curtain wall is constructed of blue lias random rubble and rises to a maximum height of about 7 meters on the southwest side. It has a roughly circular shape with two drum towers on the east side that flank a bridge, which is now part of the dwelling. There is also a circular slit on the west side. The dwelling itself features rendered random rubble with a thatched roof, replacing plain tiles, and has an external stack on the south front. It has an unusual two-cell plan.
On the east front, the entrance leads into a two-storey structure with a 1:1 bay gabled wing on the left. The wall to the right curves slightly with the drum tower. There is a three-light mullion window on the first floor and a similar window on the ground floor, along with a pointed arched doorway. To the left, two arrow slits are obscured externally by scaffolding at the time of the survey.
Inside, the entry leads into a kitchen that features two deep, arched embrasures with arrow slits, stop-chamfered beams, and a spiral stair in the room to the right beside the fireplace, which has a stop-chamfered lintel. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 178).
