Description

The property at 16 and 18 Church Street, Martock, comprises a bank and a house, likely originating as a single house in the 17th century. It is constructed of Ham stone ashlar, with smaller stones, and has a Welsh slate roof with a stepped coped gable to the southwest and a continuation to the northeast. Brick chimney stacks are also present. The building is two storeys high and has four bays. The windows are hollow-chamfered and mullioned, set within wave mould recesses. They have square labels above the lower windows. The upper bay to the right was later altered, featuring a horizontal bar casement window under a timber lintol. The lower bays, which may have originally been four-light windows, now have matching composite casement windows. A 20th-century boarded door is situated between the first and second bays, set within a cambered arched doorway with a deep lintol and square label. Another plain boarded door is positioned between the third and fourth bays, within a simple surround. The interior remains unseen. Approximately four metres northwest of the facade are boundary railings consisting of hoops enclosing plain arrowheads and cast fleur-de-lys tops, with urn finials to the standards. Matching gates are situated opposite the doors, and a return railing extends westwards towards the corner of number 18, all contributing to the setting of the houses. These properties are directly connected to number 14 to the northeast. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are present.
