Description
No 5 is a cottage located in a row of buildings, dating from the 18th century with some modifications from the 19th century, and possibly incorporating earlier elements. It is constructed from local lias stone that is roughly squared, and features a clay pantiled roof that extends continuously over the row, along with stone and brick chimney stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and has three bays. It includes two light small pane casement windows of an earlier style, set under timber lintels. In the lower bay two, there is a six-panel door with glazed toplights, framed heavily, and situated within a 20th-century timber lattice porch that has a hipped painted metal roof. The interior has not been seen.
One metre to the west of the house, there are wrought iron railings with simple pointed ends on square rods, and turned iron finials on the standards, all set on a dwarf stone wall, which matches the gate and contributes to the overall setting of the house. This property is part of William Taylor's 'fair dwelling house', which had been divided by 1714, and this plot is known as the 'Star', presumably a small inn. The houses on either side may also include earlier work, but they appear too altered to be of special interest.
