Description
Granard is a late 18th-century house located in a row on North Street in Somerton. It is built from locally sourced stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a clay pantiled roof featuring stepped coped gables and brick and stone chimney stacks. The house has two storeys and three bays, with sash windows consisting of 16 panes in plain openings, each with dovetailed stone lintels. The central entrance features a 20th-century six-panel door, which is sheltered by an open portico supported by Doric columns and a simplified entablature. Although the interior has not been seen, the exterior includes a lean-to garage on the south gable, which has a three-centred arched doorway. Additionally, there are front boundary railings located two metres east of the house, enclosing a small garden. These railings have square rods with necked arrowhead finials and turned urn finials on the standards, all set on a low stone plinth that matches the gate, contributing to the overall setting of the house.
