Walled Gardens To East Of Barrington Court With Gateways

The walled gardens to the east of Barrington Court, built around 1921-1925 and incorporating earlier work for A.A. Lyle, are partly designed by Gertrude Jekyll. They are constructed from brick, rubble, and freestone, and are enclosed by a high brick wall with a rubble coping. To the north, the gardens are bordered by 'Bustalls', which are a double-pile range of former single-storeyed cattle shelters made of brick and rubble, featuring hipped tile roofs and eleven segmental-arched openings with wooden gates, likely from the 19th century. To the east, there is a single-storeyed 17th-century outbuilding with a hipped tile roof and oval openings surrounded by freestone with leaded lights facing the garden. The garden itself is divided into three areas by rubble walling. In the west wall, there is a reused moulded oak door surround with a four-centred arch head and carved spandrels, along with a panelled door. One part of the garden features a central pool. There are two ornamental iron gateways, and a further section of walling extends to the south, which includes a very large gateway with a pair of panelled ashlar piers topped with obelisk finials, wrought-iron gates, and intricate cresting.
