Description
The principal barn at Abbey Farm is a barn with an attached horse-engine house and cart-shed, dating from the 18th century with early 19th-century alterations. It is constructed from coursed rubble with tile roofs, stone tiles at the eaves, and coped verges featuring freestone dressings. The barn has a rectangular plan and includes a hipped roof porch on each long side. It consists of six bays with slit-breathers on the elevations, and the porches are fitted with paired plank doors that have iron strap hinges.
Attached to the east side is a single-storey engine-house topped with a half-conical tile roof, which is supported by an open arcade of seven thick wooden posts that rest on stone plinths. Inside the engine-house, there are remnants of overhead gearing, including an iron pinion and drive shaft, while the driveshaft in the barn ends in an iron and wood flywheel. The barn features a raised lias threshing floor and has a roof constructed with simple tie-beams. To the north, there is a two-bay cart-shed with two high openings separated by a wooden post. This barn is a rare example of a horse engine-house in north Somerset.
