Description

Mendip House and Welshmill House are a villa dating from the 1790s, built with influences from the Adam style. The house is faced with ashlar, and features cornices, parapets with balusters, decorative panels with carved garlands, a moulded string course at first-floor level, and a rusticated plinth. It is two storeys high, with a fenestration pattern of 1 window plus 3 windows plus 1 window on the front and return elevations. The end bays are slightly projecting, with raised parapets. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, and the first floor windows have architraves and acanthus-capped pilasters supporting pediments, with garlanded panels above the outer windows. The wide doorway is tripartite, with narrow side-lights and an entablature supported by four brackets, featuring a fluted frieze with paterae. The return elevation to the south has a slight central break with a raised cornice, flanked by half-pilasters with acanthus caps, and end pilasters, one of which supports a remaining entablature. This elevation’s bays are arranged as 1 window, 3 windows, and 1 window, with a central niche containing an urn. The return elevation to the north has tall chimneys between the centre and sides. The roof is slate-covered, with ashlar chimneys featuring moulded capping. Inside, a contemporary staircase has turned balusters and a small two-bay screen with fluted pilasters. A front room to the south-west contains a contemporary Adam-style fireplace with a Greek-key pattern cornice, and a ceiling rose. A dwarf street wall with central gates provides a boundary.
