Description

North Hill House is a large, two-story building initially built in 1779 and originally used as an urban district council office. The front facade is constructed of ashlar and divided into three bays, with the central bay set back. It features a moulded cornice and glazing bar sash windows set within moulded architraves. The central doorway is distinguished by Ionic pilasters and a pediment.

In the 19th century, alterations and additions were made, including the addition of an attic storey with a slate mansard roof and a heavy balustrade. A two-window, single-story extension projects to the right, while an irregular, two-window extension with a balustraded stair turret exists to the left. Three chimneys are present, each featuring moulded capping.

The interior decoration is described as a pastiche, particularly noticeable in the Council Chamber and its adjoining coved ceiling room. The original staircase remains, although it is accompanied by a modern hall screen and newel. The rear elevation is noteworthy for a two-story bow and rusticated window surrounds.

Two buildings within the stableyard to the north are also of interest: an original stable cottage and a long coach house dating to around 1800, featuring a hipped slate roof and three windows on each floor which have been blocked.

The house was formerly owned by the Le Gros family, who were silk manufacturers, until the 1950s.
