Description
No. 1 and the attached wall to the north-east is a house dating from the 16th century, located in Minehead. It is constructed of red sandstone rubble with some limestone and has been rendered on the north-east side. The roof is from the 20th century, featuring a gabled design with plain tiles and exposed rafter-ends. There is a large external rubblestone stack that is offset at and above the eaves, with a brick shaft on the front (north-east) facade, and a corbelled rubblestone stack on the left return at the first floor.
The house has a 2-unit plan with the entrance to the right of the hall, where there is a lateral stack to the left of the door. A stair bay projects to the rear, leading to a first-floor room that also has a corbelled stack. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The windows are mostly 2-light hollow-moulded pegged oak-framed with 20th-century leaded lights, some of which have grilles. There is a small single-light window at eaves level in the stair bay at the rear.
To the right of the main stack, there is a restored 16th-century chamfered oak doorcase with a planked and studded door featuring strap hinges. Above this door is a small single-light window in an oak frame, and to the far right, there are two 19th-century three-light casement windows. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted to have a stone spiral stair at the rear.
A rubblestone wall, approximately 2 meters high and 3 meters long, is attached to the south-east corner of the property. Historically, in 1731, the parish meeting decided to lease Punter's tenement at the foot of Church Steps for a rent of £6.5s per annum, as it was deemed more economical to gather the poor together in a workhouse.
