Description

The Almonry, formerly known as Sydenham Alms Houses, is a group of almshouses that have been converted into a private dwelling. They date back to the early 16th century and were transformed into a private residence in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with quoins and coped verges, topped by an asbestos slate roof. It features brick stacks at the gable ends and has a symmetrical facade with two central bays flanked by a pair of additional bays.

Originally, the structure comprised six single-cell units and is now a single-storey building with an inserted attic. The facade has six bays, with two modern three-light casement dormers added in the central bays. The ground floor has two-light hollow chamfered stone mullioned windows with 20th-century leading, each positioned to the left of a Tudor arched opening. Four windows to the left are blocked. The main entrance is now located in the second bay on the right, featuring a ribbed and studded plank door with a stable door at the end bay on the right. The interior was not viewed. These almshouses were built by the Sydenhams of Combe Sydenham and ceased functioning as almshouses when the estate was sold in 1896.
