Description

Pillar House is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century, although it has been partly demolished and enlarged in the late 20th century. The exterior features colour-washed rubble and roughcast, with a gabled porch room supported by two circular and one square pier. The roofs are thatched, and there is a brick stack on the right gable end. The original layout likely consisted of three cells and a cross passage, of which two cells remain to the right of a 20th-century through passage leading to a 20th-century wing. The cottage is one and a half storeys tall with a 1:2 bay arrangement. The porch has a two-light casement window, while the right side features two early 19th-century leaded iron casement dormers. On the ground floor, there is a three-light casement and two two-light casements to the right of a four-panel door, which is accessed by a flight of two steps. Inside, the ground floor has two rooms with steeply chamfered beams and a chamfered lintel above the gable end fireplace, which has a peaked doorframe to the left that originally led to the stairs. There is also a fireplace against the cross passage wall with a chamfered lintel. The upper storey was not viewed. The gabled porch room is likely not original to the house and may have been added later, possibly in the early 20th century. Set high on a steep bank overlooking the road, Pillar House is considered one of the most picturesque cottages in the village.
