Description
Melba Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been converted into a single dwelling. Originally built in the 17th century, the building underwent alterations in the 18th century and again in the mid-20th century. The exterior features roughcast over rubble with a thatched roof, which has two half-hipped gables on the front and brick stacks at the gable ends. The original layout consisted of two single-cell units accessed from the front, but it has been modified to include two cells entered from an extension at the rear. The cottage is one and a half storeys tall and has two bays. The windows, which are from the 20th century, include two-light leaded casements in the half-hipped gables and two-light windows with glazing bars on the ground floor. Entry is through the 20th-century extension at the rear. Inside, there are remnants of a stud and panel screen that divides one area, featuring a chamfered wooden lintel, as well as a collar and principal roof. There are also two sets of winder stairs located beside their respective fireplaces.
