Description
Nos 9 to 12 on Hammet Street is a terrace of three 3-storey buildings with five-window brown brick fronts, constructed between 1788 and 1790 when the street was laid out by Sir Benjamin Hammet, who was the Member of Parliament for Taunton and Keeper of the Castle. The properties are separated by plain pilasters and feature a continuous eaves cornice with old tile roofs. The sash windows have plain reveals, although some glazing bars are missing. The doorways are framed by painted stone doorcases with half-round Tuscan pilasters, open pediments, and traceried fanlights. No 9 has a six-panel door with four panels, while No 10 has no panels. There are two small shop windows inserted in No 9, and an insurance plaque is located on No 12. The side of No 9 has three windows and forms part of the west side of Church Square. The listed buildings on Hammet Street, along with St Mary Magdalene Church and the listed buildings in Church Square, create an extremely important group.
