Description
This barn, located 17 metres north of Chicks Farmhouse, dates back to 1764 and is constructed from local stone rubble with Ham stone dressings. The main roof is covered with corrugated asbestos cement sheets, replacing the original thatch, while extensions feature clay pantiles. The barn is partially two-storey and consists of nine bays. It is plinthed and has four 4-centre arched doorways with labels over them on the east flank, located in bays -1, -3, -5, and -9. There is a small matching doorway over bay -1, and bay -2 features a 2-light transomed 4-centre arched window with 16th-century style tracery, along with upper doors in bays -4 and -7.
On the west flank, there are high doors in a gabled projection in bay -5, and lean-to buildings on either side have catslide roofs, with a variety of old plain windows and doors. The north end includes a 2-bay open shed with a half-hipped clay pantile roof, supported by beam collar trusses with three purlins on each major slope. The south gable features a cinquefoil cusped pointed arch doorway above a concrete block lean-to building, which is not included in the listing. Above this doorway is an oval ventilation hole and a stone plaque that reads 'Built in the Year 1764'. The interior was filled with hay as of August 1983 and was not inspected, but a cider press remains in position in bay -2. Some architectural elements may have been reused from the Church of St. Martin of Tours, where the tower was completed in 1765.
