Description

Oriel Cottage, dated inside 1709 and 1723, is likely of older construction, with records suggesting it was leased in 1692. The building is presented as a gable-ended structure with two and a half storeys. It is built of rubble and has a pantile roof, with both stone and brick chimneys. The west-facing gable end features a mid-19th century sash window and a door, both set within blocked surrounds. A segmental dormer window is also visible. The north front is slightly angled, and a section of the first floor has been jettied. Mullion windows with ogee and flat moulding, dating to around 1720, are present, along with a more recent wooden casement window. A lower, projecting two-storey gabled wing extends to the north, formerly known as "Mrs Fortune's Dairy". A rear extension, with a pantile roof, incorporates a former cottage that has been converted into a barn. The interior includes stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and it is believed to contain two dated beams (1709 and 1723) and a dated fireplace (1723) on the ground floor, though the fireplace is currently concealed. A stairhead projection has been treated as a blind dormer at the rear.
