Description

No. 1 Gentle Street is an 18th-century building situated on a sloping, winding pedestrian street paved with stone setts. The front elevation is rendered with an ashlar plinth, side piers, and dressings, and features a modern pantile roof. The building is two and a half storeys high, with a central dormer window. It has three windows with glazing bar sashes set in reveals. A flush panelled door is sheltered by a flat, moulded hood supported by cut brackets. A range of glazing bar sashes is present on the gable end, and a basement window is also visible. A three-storey rubble cottage forms an extension to the rear, featuring three windows, with glazing bar sashes on the second floor, and one pair of glazing bar casements on the first floor. A central door has a wooden lintel, and a three-light oak-framed casement is located to the left (possibly originally featuring moulded mullions). A later projecting, two-storey, pantiled extension has been added to the left-hand side.
