Description

The Somerset Nuffield Hospital, originally a house known as Staplegrove Elm, dates from around 1835 and is possibly designed by Richard Carver. It was enlarged in the early 1970s and is constructed with rendered walls featuring Ham stone dressings, an ashlar plinth, and a flat string course. The building has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by shaped brackets and a moulded cornice. The central sedimented bay projects slightly and is adorned with moulded brackets around the deep eaves of the tympanum, with brick stacks on the returns.

The hospital is a double pile block with an extended service wing to the right, standing two storeys tall and featuring a 2:1:2 bay arrangement. All window openings have moulded surrounds, with the first-floor windows interrupted by a string course. The windows include 9-pane sash windows on the first floor and sash windows on the ground floor, with the architrave cut by the plinth and enclosing an ashlar apron below the windows. The central entrance consists of recessed half-glazed double doors with a rectangular light, framed by an ashlar Ham stone Ionic screen that carries an entablature.

The lower service wing to the right has a slate roof with coped verges and also stands two storeys tall, featuring 2 bays with 16-pane sash windows and a plank door on the right. This wing has been extended by two bays with a 20th-century addition. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a good contemporary firegrate in the reception area. A 20th-century structure adjoining the hospital is not included in the listing. The building became a hospital in the early 1970s.
